Alfonso Fernández Mañueco: he is the PP candidate in the elections in Castilla y León
Alfonso Fernandez Manueco (Salamanca, 1965) attends the regional elections of Castile and León with the aim of making the PP the most voted list and not depending on the support of other parties to govern after having definitively broken with Ciudadanos. Mañueco is a party man and whose political career is linked to Castilla y León, which culminated in his arrival as regional president in July 2019. He joined Nuevas Generaciones when he was 18 years old.
Within the PP, he enjoys a reputation as “calm man”, similar to that exhibited by former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Despite his “calm”, he did not hesitate to call elections via social networks on December 20. Already at a press conference, he explained the reason for this electoral advance: he had lost confidence in his government partner, Ciudadanos. He accused the orange formation of “treason and disloyalty” for “having agreed behind their backs on the budgets”. He also assured that “there was a certain imminent risk” of a motion of no confidence.
Fernández Mañueco graduated in law from the University of Salamanca and in 1985 founded the first student association in Castile and León, the Association of Independent Students of the University of Salamanca. At 18, he joined the New Generations of the PP.
He is brother of Jose Maria Fernandez, who was named president in 2011 of the defunct Union Deportiva Salamanca. Alfonso Fernández Manueco’s father, Marcelo Fernandez Nieto, was a Falangist lawyer and a Dominican friar who developed his political career under the Franco regime. He was mayor of Salamanca between 1969 and 1971, lawyer in the Francoist Cortes between 1967 and 1977, as well as civil governor of the province of Zamora between 1976 and 1977.
his political career
Alfonso Fernández Mañueco began his political career as a councilor in the Salamanca City Council between 1995 and 2001. He caught the attention of Jean-Vincent Herrera, then president of the government of Castilla y León. Herrera appointed him Minister of the Presidency, a position he held between 2001 and 2007, and Minister of Justice and Interior, between 2007 and 2011.
Manueco was Mayor of Salamanca between 2011 and 2018. In 2017 he was elected president of the PP in Castile and León. The pinnacle of his career was reaching the presidency of the regional government in July 2019 thanks to a coalition pact with Ciudadanos. He now turns to govern alone after the regional elections on February 13.
his wife is Serafina Martin Lozano, daughter of local PP leader José Martínez, popularly known as Pepe Villares, mayor for 45 years of Villares de la Reina (Salamanca). Serafina Martín Lozano works as secretary of the city council of Villoria (Salamanca).
The marriage has two daughters, aged 24 and 21 respectively. The eldest is a lawyer, like her father, and a member of the New Generations of the PP. The little girl is studying business administration at the University of Salamanca.
Alfonso Fernández Mañueco’s greatest hobbies are bullfighting and football. Although his brother was the president of the Salamanca Sporting Union, he is a Real Madrid fan.
