Latino groups are calling for the ouster of a Trenton city councilor after making the latest in a series of xenophobic and otherwise controversial comments.
City Councilor Robin Vaughn made the final remarks at a town hall meeting, telling Latino traders that âYou have to follow the rules. We are not in a banana republic. In another exchange, she asked Adam Cruz, Trenton’s business administrator, “Can’t you understand English?” “
Cruz responded to this last comment with, “Just for the record, I speak three languages: English, Italian and Spanish,” to which Vaughn replied, “You are not that smart. You are not that bright.
Members of the Latino Merchants Association gathered outside City Hall to demand his resignation. They were joined by City Councilor Joseph Harrison, whom Vaughn called a “dumb” at last week’s council meeting. All said they were tired of the story of Vaughn’s derogatory comments.
” It is not the first time. She made offensive comments against homosexuals, against Jews, now against Latinos, âsaid LMA member Manny Hernández.
Indeed, Vaughn launched a belligerent rant last year against the mayor of Trenton, Reed Gusciora, who is openly gay, calling him an “f —— pedophile” during a meeting on COVID funds. 19. The New Jersey Globe released audio clips in which, during the same reunion, Vaughn told Harrison, “Keep sucking Reed Gusciora’s d whatever you want, mother ——.”
In 2019, NJ.com reported that Vaughn defended a colleague who used the phrase “Jew her down” during a lawsuit.
Vaughn’s latest comments also drew a rebuke from Governor Phil Murphy.
“These xenophobic comments are an affront to our core values ââof diversity and inclusion, and I condemn them in the strongest terms,” ââMurphy wrote on Twitter.
NBC10’s sister station Telemundo 62 attempted to reach Vaughn for comment, but she did not respond.
