Newcastle United prepare £25m bid for ‘phenomenal’ Premier League-linked star
The Magpies have reportedly stepped up their interest in a La Liga star.
Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in Real Madrid striker Marco Asensio – according to reports in Spain.
The 28-cap Spain international has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Bernabeu since joining Real from Mallorca in 2014, winning three La Liga titles, three Champions League winners’ medals, three FIFA World Cups clubs and two UEFA Super Cups.
He remained in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans and finished last season as Real’s third top scorer as his side won a La Liga and Champions League double – but uncertainty surrounds his future as he enters the last 12 months of his current contract.
Asensio – who has been described as phenomenal by ex-Real boss Zinedine Zidane – spoke about his future during the recent flurry of international matches, saying: “I’m focused on the national team. When this focus is over , we’ll talk. We’ll see what I’ll do with my future.
“Renew or leave Real Madrid? I think there are three possibilities, there is also the possibility of staying and fulfilling my contract year.
“My future should not depend on whether or not I have a place at the next World Cup.
“Rumors are part of football, and more so at Real Madrid. Top players are always associated with it. A lot of players come out every summer and that’s something we have to live with.”
A Bernabeu departure looks increasingly likely with talks over a new deal yet to come to fruition and Spanish outlet Fichajes have reported Newcastle are looking to cash in by submitting £25m for the 26-year-old .
However, this offer may fall short with the report stating that Real are looking for over £30m for their long-serving star.
Manchester United Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Serie A giants AC Milan have all been linked with a move for the Spaniard in recent months.
The Magpies defender completes his loan move to the Championship club
Newcastle are reportedly close to agreeing a deal that will see defender Ciaran Clark join Sheffield United on a season-long loan.
The Republic of Ireland international made just 14 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side last season but was dropped from the Magpies Premier League squad at the end of January.
Several clubs have been linked with a move for the centre-back, but the Daily Telegraph have reported that Sheffield United are “close” to agreeing a deal to bring Clark to Bramall Lane.
The move would virtually sever Clark’s ties with Newcastle as his current deal comes to an end next summer.
