Savannah is Georgia’s oldest city (and its first capital)
Savannah, Georgia is more than parks covered in Spanish moss and southern charm – it’s also full of early American history.
Savannah is the oldest city in the State of Deep South Georgia and was the British colonial capital of the province of Georgia and later the first capital of the state of Georgia. Today it has some of the best pre-war architecture in the United States and is a very popular destination.
While passing through the charming South, take the time to discover the famous southern dishes that we never tire of. If the national parks of the West are spectacular, the South with its charm is also worth a visit!
History of the savannah
Savannah was founded in 1733. At the time of the American Revolutionary War, it was an important strategic port city.
At the start of the Revolutionary War, Savannah was the southernmost trading port of the Thirteen Colonies. British troops occupied the town in 1778 and occupied it for the duration of the war. In 1779, a combined force of American, French and even Haitian soldiers failed to dislodge the British.
- Civil war: Was saved from destruction by a peace handover to General Sherman
At the time of the Civil War, it was the sixth most populous city in Confederation and one of the main objects of General William T. Sherman’s march to sea. In 1864, the city authorities negotiated a peaceful surrender of the city which saved it from destruction.
Today it is the third largest city of Georiga by metropolitan area with a population of around 400,000 inhabitants.
